The battle of the gaming consoles continues between Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 4, and Nintendo’s Switch. Ever since the announcement, the companies have gone back and forth at each other for winning over fans and getting high sales for the platform. The Sony and Microsoft released the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One back in November 2013, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. All of the consoles have had plenty of time to convince the buyers, so it is only appropriate that we do a comparison of the console and game sales numbers.
VGChartz has gathered the latest sales numbers for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch Worldwide. The data is up to the month of March 2020. The total game console sales numbers of 2019 are quite interesting as Nintendo’s Switch has managed to outsell the total sales numbers of Xbox One and PS4 combined. During 2019, Nintendo Switch sold 19.3 M units (50.1%) compared to 14.2 M units of PS4 (37%) and 4.9 M units of Xbox One (12.9%).
Considering the late entry of the Nintendo Switch (3 years old), the sales numbers are quite remarkable as the switch already has 25% market share. In comparison, Xbox One has 23% and Playstation 4 has massive 52% market share over 7 years.
In total, the Sony PlayStation 4 has crossed the 107 million mark, the Microsoft Xbox One has reached 46 million mark and the Switch has already achieved 52 million mark. In just about 3 years, Nintendo Switch has sold almost half of Playstation 4 consoles Sony has sold in 7 years. In summary, PS4 is leading the pact with no some signs of slowdown and Nintendo’s Switch is selling like crazy (outsold the competition during 2019) and Xbox sales have struggled to increase at the same pace as PS4 and Switch.
The best selling global video games of 2019 are listed below as well. The Super Smash Bros. (2018) on Nintendo Switch continues to have strong sales numbers, which is partly responsible for growing market share of Nintendo Switch Console. Second and third place is taken by Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII on the PS4 platform. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Spider-Man (PS4) also made the top five list. The popularity of PS4 in Asia and Europe definitely translates in the sales numbers of video games as three of the top five video games were on the PS4 platform.
