LG has officially announced it’s 2018 premium smartphone, the LG G7 ThinQ (pronounced thin-cue). With the G7, LG is focusing on four main features including the upgraded camera, smart AI, bright display, and improved audio.
The LG G7 features polished metal rim with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back. The device is rated at IP68 for dust and water resistance. The G7 has a 6.1″ LCD display with an iPhone X like notch. However, there is some unused space/bezel at the bottom of the screen which looks okay if the notch at the top is artificially removed using software options. The LG G7 is powered by the latest Snapdragon™ 845 processor and offers 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage, which puts it right up there with other Android flagship smartphones (Galaxy S9+, Huawei P20 Pro, Pixel 2 XL).
The Camera
The LG G7 ThinQ has dual 16Mp cameras on the back and an 8MP camera up front, which features standard and Super Wide Angle configurations. The AI Cam now offers 19 shooting modes with an option to select 3 additional effect options if the AI Cam is not good enough. The camera also features an improved low light mode, which provides 4x brighter images. The camera will also have Live Photo mode, which will record one second before and after the shutter is pressed.
Smart AI
LG G7 will be one of the Android devices that will feature Google Lens feature, which allows the user the search for objects (landmarks, plants, animals, books, text) in the image using the artificial intelligence and computer vision. Google lens will allow the user to add a business card to contacts, add events to the calendar, visit websites,or look up an item on a restaurant menu.
In addition, LG has added a dedicated button, which will launch Google Assistance, two taps will launch Google Lens and hold down will allow the user to talk to Google Assistant (the microphone can recognize voice from 5 meters away).
Notched Display
The LG G7 features a 6.1″ QHD display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 1000 nit brightness. The display offers six different viewing modes: Auto, Eco, Cinema, Sports, Game and Expert. The Auto mode automatically optimizes display and power consumption by analyzing the content of games or photos.
Speaking of the infamous iPhone X like notch, LG does offer an option to remove the notch by changing the notification bar to black.
Boombox Sound
LG G7 will feature a resonance chamber that delivers double the bass for a “boombox” like experience. LG claims that the resonance chamber can act like a woofer to amplify the bass effect when the phone is placed on a solid surface. Unlike the iPhone and Google Pixel 2 XL, the LG G7 will feature a headphone jack, which can deliver up to 7.1 channel audio with virtual 3D sound using DTS:X and Hi-Fi Quad DAC.
