HARLEY-DAVIDSON releases first electric motorcycle: The LiveWire

After its introduction in 2014, Harley-Davidson is finally releasing the LiveWire in 2019 as they have started taking pre-orders. The LiveWire is a major departure from the traditional motorcycles. When Harley-Davidson announced the concept of LiveWire back in 2014, the entire industry was shocked because no one was expecting an electric motorcycle from Harley-Davidson. Later in 2014, multiple journalists were invited to try out the concept and almost everyone was impressed as the motorcycle was fast, very much electric with lots of torque and felt like a real motorcycle with an electric motorcycle. Harley’s main goal with the LiveWire was to attract new and young riders into the world of motorcycling. However, the details of the LiveWire motorcycle unveiled by Harley Davidson might suggest otherwise.

Features of the Harley-Davidson LiveWire

With the power of electric motor, you get instantaneous power as soon as you flick your wrist as there is no clutch to release and no gears to change. The electric motor allows you to go from 0 TO 60 in UNDER 3.5 SECONDS. The LiveWire motorcycle is estimated to have 110 mile or 177 km range. There are two ways of charging the LiveWire, including the onboard Level 1 charger and power cord to connect to any standard household outlet, which lets you have a full charge overnight. You can use the public Level 3 DC fast charge stations for a faster charge. With the LiveWire, Harley-Davidson is offering the H-D Connect Service, which provides cellular telematics connectivity (via Panasonic) and Harley‑Davidson™ App allows you to connect remotely through your smart phone. You can also check battery charge status, location on map, and get security alerts if it’s been bumped, moved, or tampered with.

The LiveWire offers H-D Revelation Powertrain thanks to the magnetic electric motor located below the battery, which also lowers the motorcycle;s center of gravity. The electric bike also features a lightweight aluminum frame to provide precise and responsive handling. You will be able to adjust the suspension as well to change the ride comfort and handling. The LiveWire also comes with a 4.3 inch full color touchscreen display to provide you with navigation, music, and alert information as you ride.

Pricing and Availability

Harley-Davidson has listed the suggested Retail Prices for base model at
$29,799. At that price point, the LiveWire is a really expensive motorcycle. We are not sure how Harley is planning to attract new buyers in the world of motorcycling with that kind of pricing. It seems that Harley is going to market the LiveWire as a premium niche product. The LiveWire will be coming out on August 2019 and it is ready to be pre-ordered at any Harley-Davidson dealer near you in North America and Europe.
