Brēth Air Purifier uses plants to provide 100% natural air purification

Air purifiers are quite common as Americans spend almost $500 million each year. We constantly breathe stale air as we spend almost spend 90% of time indoors. We breath 12 times per minute, 720 times per hour, 17000 times per day, and 6.3 million times per year. The brēth is a plant based air purifier that that reminds you to add water and actively cleans the air with the power of almost 200 plants.

The Science behind brēth

The science behind brēth is called phytoremediation, it is actually a simple process. The brēth system works by actively pushing air through a filtration system, rather than passively cleaning the air as plants normally do on their own. Plants have a symbiotic relationship with beneficial bacteria that live around their root system. The plants use the bacteria and gases that are being circulated through A/C system as a food source. The brēth is actually making the plants work, it adds light to get photosynthesis going to help feed the sugars down to the roots. The sugars then help the growth of natural bacteria in the soil as it turbocharges the . The research has shown that the microbial in the soil cleans the air and breaks down the volatile organic compounds. It is very simple, it forces the contaminated air through the roots and also from the back that goes through the plants. In this process, brēth gets rid of bad smells, food odors, etc. Humidity is also balanced in the room as the new clean air is delivered back into the room and to you.

The brēth system comes with plants in special pots that have an opening at the bottom, which is where the patented nozzle supplies the moisture and air to the plants. The key to this technology is the balance of air and moisture that is delivered to the plants. It is important to note that plants are not under any stress as they love to get air to their roots and the constant moisture helps to prevent them from drying out. The brēth unit holds three plant pots and there is also a light that plugs into the unit.

The idea and efficiency

The creators came up with the idea from all of the feedback from larger green wall installation that was done few years ago. The brēth is actually a response from people who wanted to get this technology in their homes and offices.

In order to test the air purifying capacity of the brēth, Ambient Group Inc. ran official air purification tests, also called flow through chamber test. They built a glass chamber and stuck the unit inside the chamber that was completed sealed. The test had an intake to bring in formaldehyde at a very high rate, which goes directly into the brēth unit and into the fan, which is forced through the plants. The research team measure the intake air and outtake air readings. The brēth unit showed results that were off the charts over multiple runs and using different testing equipment. See the chart below from the official study with results showing removal of upwards of 70% of air toxins with just 1 pass through the brēth unit.

Everyone loves plants but many feel that they can’t take care of them, so brēth provides an improved efficiency for air purification with a process that requires an established time for adding water to the brēth system, which then waters the plants automatically. With this approach, anyone can easily take care of the plants without having to worry about anything.  The plants are hard to kill, you have to add water every 10 days. If you forget, there is an indicator on the unit that turns red, in addition to an app that lets you now when the unit needs water. The app also let’s you know how much air has been cleaned. The plants are also interchangeable, so you can order a new combination of plants to change things up. The brēth system comes with three plant options including Green & Pure, Garden Bloom, and Exotic Trio. The Green & Pure plants include Golden Pothos, Goldstar Dracaena, and Brasil Philodendron. The Garden Bloom plant option includes Anthurium, Maidenhair Fern, and Neoregelia Bromeliad. The third Exotic Trio option includes Hoya, Bird’s Nest Fern, and Neon Pothos.

Pricing and Availability

The brēth system launched on Kickstarter two days ago and it has already reached their goal of $50,000 with 277 backers raising almost $57,910. There are still 28 more days to go so this project is a runaway success.

If you live in the United States, then you can pledge $99 to receive the brēth unit with one plant combination with an estimated delivery around December 2018. The regular retail price of the brēth unit will be $199, so you will get an early bird discount by backing this already funded project.
