Apple Car? Is this a new product line for Apple. Well an Apple employee claims that the company is working on a vehicle that will “give Tesla a run for its money”. Additionally, Apple has apparently hired many of the Tesla employees. Currently, according to LinkedIn, Apple has 50 employees who have worked for Tesla specializing in mechanics, robotics, and manufacturing.
So there are many possible products that Apple could be working on. First, it could be a self-driving car just like the one Google and Audi have manufactured. Google has already obtained a licence for self-driving car in the state of Nevada. However, given Apple’s area of expertise, it is very likely that this is just for improvement of their CarPlay infotainment software. CarPlay’s debut is long overdue as the 2014 launch was delayed so the additional work force maybe just for this project. We might see features similar to what Tesla offers, with the ability to unlock the car with your phone.
Whether Apple is trying to compete with Tesla or not? Only time will tell. We should get a better idea when Apple officially releases CarPlay with some 2015 vehicles like the Hyundai Sonata.
