MagX is a magnetic connector cable that transforms the USB-C port on your laptop. Apple initially introduced the magnetic power connector, also known as MagSafe, for the MacBook at Macworld 2006. The MagSafe connector was introduced to prevent your laptop from flying off your work surface when someone caught the power cord in their foot. This is a really common situation especially when you have your pets, kids, or roommates in your work space. The MagSafe connector was a new kind of power adapter that would keep the power cable magnetically held in place until it is yanked/pulled. The MagSafe connector saved a lot of hassle because it prevented damage to both your MacBook and the power cable.
With the introduction of the new MacBooks, Apple has removed the MagSafe connector by introducing the new USB-C port. The following Mac Models use the USB-C ports:
- iMac Pro
- iMac models from 2017
- Mac mini (2018)
- MacBook Pro models from 2016 or later
- MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018)
- MacBook (2015 and later)
- iPad Pro 11-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
USB Type-C and Specifications
In July 2016, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) formally adopted the specifications for USB Type-C™ Cable and Connector, USB Power Delivery, and USB 3.1 (SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps). The IEC is the world’s leading organization (168 countries, representing 98% of the world population and 96% of world energy generation) that prepares and publishes globally relevant International Standards for the whole energy chain, including all electrical, electronic and related technologies, devices and systems. The specifications defined for USB Type-C facilitated thinner cable design, enhanced usability, and a standard for the entire industry.
The USB-C technology provides a single-cable solution that combines USB Type-C, USB 3.1 and USB Power Delivery for data, audio/video, and power delivery.
- SB 3.1 enables speeds up to 10 Gbps, supporting audio/video for USB hosts, hubs and devices.
- USB Power Delivery was developed to provide flexible, bi-directional power capabilities by enabling faster charging and increased power levels up to 100W.
MagX
The MagX, by MagaBolt, brings the magnetic connector back to your laptop for only $19. The MagX has an industrial design with metallic surface and low profile, which keeps it out of your way when it is attached to your devices. The MagX connector is 0.70 inches (17.8 mm) in length and 0.17 inches (4.3 mm) in width. The MagX features very fast 100W power delivery, which is the maximum amount supported by USB-C standard. It can also transfer data at maximum speeds of 10 GB/s and support 5K High Resolution video output.
Features of the MagX Connector
- Fast 100W Power Delivery
- Super Speed Data Transfer at 10Gbps
- High-Res 5K Video Output
- Connect in any direction
- Protects the USB-C against dust, wear, and tear
Compatibility
In addition to Mac products listed above, the MagX works with any USB-C devices including USB-C Hubs & Docks to Google Pixel smartphones. Yes, the MagX supports 4.3 A fast charging with all USB-C phones, tablets, and notebooks, and even USB-C Hubs &Docks.
Even though majority of USB-C chargers are interchangeable, it is important to note that this is not always guaranteed. For instance, there are some windows laptops (i.e. HP Spectre x2) that come with proprietary chargers, which was intentionally designed that way to prevent damage from third party chargers. If you are a Mac user, the good news is that Apple doesn’t have stricter restrictions on USB-C charging, so you can rest assured as the MagX will work with all of your Mac products.
Pricing and Availability
MagX is currently fundraising for product on Kickstarter. The project was launched on 28 December 2018, and it has been 100% funded with $7,754 raised by almost 281 backers (pledged of $1,277 goal).
The MagX is available on Kickstarter for $19 USD, which gives you 1 MagX connector and Magnetic Cable with 12-month standard warranty and worldwide shipping. The product is estimated to be delivered by March 2019.
