This week, Samsung has announced the Galaxy Z Flip, a foldable phone that directly competes with the foldable Motorola Razr. Both of the phones are basically the same, where they fold in portrait mode so that it fits in your pocket easier but unfolds to reveal a full screen display. However, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has many different advantages over the Motorola Razr. Check out seven reasons why Galaxy Z Flip is better than Motorola Razr.
1. The Design
Let’s start with the Design. The Galaxy Z Flip uses the same metal and glass body that Samsung used on the Galaxy Fold, whereas Motorola uses a plastic body design. As a result, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a more premium feel in the hand compared to the Motorola Razr.
2. The Cameras
On the back, Motorola has decided to go with a single camera setup whereas the Galaxy Z Flip uses a dual camera setup with dual aperture feature with wide-angle and ultra wide-angle cameras that are likely to take better pictures based on past performance in other Samsung devices.
3. The Display
Motorola uses a plastic OLED display, which is a standard for all first gen foldable phones that have come to market. However, Galaxy Z Flip is more like a second gen foldable phone from Samsung and it uses ultra thin glass as opposed to plastic, which is expected to be more durable than plastic. Samsung also uses a higher resolution 2,636 x 1,080 pixels AMOLED display with 425 pixel density whereas Motorola uses 2,142 x 876 pixels OLED display with 373 pixel density. It is safe to say that Galaxy Z Flip has a better screen. In addition, Samsung has protected the screen from particles and dirt better than Motorola Razr, which has an easy to lift screen near the hinge. However, it is important to note that Galaxy Z Flip has a noticeable crease in the middle of the screen when the phone is unfolded, which is something you don’t see on a plastic display.
Update: After a durability test by JerryRigEverything on youtube, there are several reports saying that Samsung is using fake glass because the screen was easily scratched during the test. Note that Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a protective layer on top of the Ultra Thin Glass, which needs to be handled with care. In summary, the Galaxy Z Flip does have a glass screen but the outer layer is still plastic, which will scratch if you are not careful.
4. The Performance
The internals of Z Flip also have an advantage with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage compared to 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage on Motorola Razr. The Z Flip uses a better processor, Snapdragon 855, compared to Motorola Razr with Snapdragon 710.
5. The Battery
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a bigger battery with 3300 mAh compared to 2560 mAh on Motorola Razr. Samsung has also built in wireless charging and fast charging in the Galaxy Z Flip
6. The Hinge
With a foldable design, the performance and quality of the hinge is extremely important for durability. The Galaxy Z Flip has a very robust hinge design that builds on the hinge design of the Galaxy Fold. The hinge on Galaxy Z Flip is stiffer with three levels so that you can open the screen at three different angles. It is important to note that Samsung hinge doesn’t fold completely flat whereas Motorola Razr folds completely flat. Only time will tell which hinge design is better but based on the initial look and feel, the Samsung has a sturdy feeling hinge design compared to the Motorola Razr with a creaky hinge.
7. The Price
Finally, price is the most important factor that consumers consider when buying a smartphone. Samsung once again has an advantage over Motorola as the Galaxy Z Flip costs almost $100 cheaper at $1380 USD compared to the Razr at $1499. At this price range, you can argue that a price difference of $100 doesn’t really matter but at the end of the day, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a lot to offer at a cheaper price point compared to the Motorola Razr.
Given the above reasons and facts, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is simply a better overall device. Check out a comparison of technical specifications below. Let us know what you think of these devices in the comment section below.
